Fist of all we raised of $660.00 in funds for the Red Cross and their efforts to support disaster relief in Japan. Secondly, taking part in a plastic bag collection to support GreenNorthamptons recycling initiative we collected hundreds of bags which are going to be used for a very unique purpose. On April 23rd this group is hoping to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest plastic bag ball ever created. This ball will be the centerpiece of a parade scheduled to leave the Smith College Gates and roll to Pulaski Park. I suggest looking to the Gazette for further information and details. Finally, as we complete our 3rd School wide read in as many years, The Revealers, Ms. Heyes' classes have undertaken a very intense and honest project in which some of our students "reveal" some hard truths about their own lives. Great job to all who partook in any or all of these items.

One week to go until April break...Our variety show was excellent, full of talent and full of spirit. Our first round of MCAS testing across grade levels was implemented this week with an organized and positive approach. Our teachers were prepared and as I've typed before I can only hope our students appreciate this effort and give it their best. The band concert was a tremendous success. The cafeteria was packed with parents, guardians, extended family, students and fans. There were two highlights for me. The first was witnessing he 6th grade transformation. Many of the students who were brand new to an instrument in September were able to perform Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, it sounded great and got me to think about the Red Sox upcoming 100 win season! Secondly, I was taken back to high school when our 7, 8 band did a Journey medley and I'm sure I wasn't the only one singing the tunes (in my head). The next concert will be at The Pines Theater in June and promises to be a nice night.
With all the emphasis on going green across the nation, JFK was green on Thursday, Specifically, Saint Patrick's Day Green..
Our 8th graders took part in the Needs Assessment Survey, their responses will move our health education department in the direction of where there is the most need. I'd like to encourage parents and guardians to talk to their kids about risky behaviors and how poor decisions often can have negative consequences not only for them but for everyone.
MCAS begins next week. Much effort is put into the preparation by all staff and students, let's hope this effort reaps a positive outcome during result time.

Another busy week which included the 5th grade transition evening. Rather than focus on my day, I thought I'd share what I get to see on a typical day as I observe the many happenings in this building.

I thought I'd share a recent trip from one end of a hallway to another. I had some business to deal with in the gymnasium and after leaving the gym, I made my way towards the 6th grade wing just past the entrance used by community members when they use the pool.

My first stop was Mr. MacDonalds room. His ceiling tiles have been recently painted to resemble the constellations which are aligned with some of his science curriculum. Mr. Mac was not the center of attention but rather his Smartboard was and the students were attentive as he navigated this huge computer through a variety of websites.

I left his room and continued down the hall stopping in Room 114 where students were all revising their written work for a five paragraph essay they had been working on. Miss Patenadue and Miss Marshall were alternating between two groups of students t tables while two others were typing their completed work on computers.

My next stop was Mrs. Walden's room where students were working on simplifying fractions. I took the opportunity to draw a pizza on the board and ask a few questions about part vs. whole, whole and half and the students were engaged as they used their personal white boards complete with an old sock for erasing!

Across the hall it smelled wonderful. Mrs. Martel's 8th graders were in the separate kitchens with griddles making pancakes. It was alter in the day but the students didn't mind having the breakfast food...as long as they were going to be eating something!

My last stop in the hallway was Mr. Kohrman's technology Room. The students had all created mouse trap cars complete with recycled CD wheels. They were testing their cars for both distance and accuracy by placing their cars on the floor with a goal of hitting a coffee can about 20 feet away. As this was done the other students would cheer or jeer if it happened. I saw two students hit the can.

All this activity all the time....

Well, one quarter down and three to go. It is going by very fast. Our school photos have been completed and are retakes as well. Forum continues to develop and our after school activities are really taking shape. I encourage all who read this to investigate after school opportunities. Clubs like SOCA, Civil Rights and Science are well attended. The Paw Print and Theater Workshop continue to grow in popularity and the many offerings in the after school program are always full of enthusiastic students. As I type this one of the Northampton Public School's finest will wrap up her career on Wednesday December 1st. Ms. Patty McGrath a professional educator since 1976, a 7th grade special education teacher and our Department Head will turn in her badge and move on to the next phase of her life. She'll be busy between refereeing basketball games, teaching college courses at the Elms and enjoying her family. We have had some exciting happenings here at JFK.

Our 8th graders have already begun to consider their high school options. Dena Roy, Admissions Coordinator at Smith Voke came out and met with all the 8th graders. If parents and guardians have questions or want to inquire about SmithVoke's offerings I encourage you to call Ms. Roy at 587-1414 ext. 162.

We delved into the world of cyber webinars for a presentation for parents and guardians on how to prevent cyberbullying. The information was excellent and tips for parents and guardians were quite helpful. If anybody is interested inthe information they can contact me at anytime.

Our 8th grade had a culminating event to celebrate their community service projects. Each student was asked to seek out community service opportunities and perform two hours of service. Students did a wide range of activities including but certainly not limited to working with young children, spending time with the elderly, cleaning areas of the city, serving the hungry/homeless, working at shelters for both people and animals...the list goes on. Regardless of how they contributed it was admirable, a great learning experience and both the students and whoever they worked for benefited.

Halloween was celebrated on Friday the 29th here at school and it was a fun time here. Costumes were plentiful on both students and faculty members. The 8th grade had their first dance of the year and it was a (naturally) a costume dance. The majority of the kids dressed up and the profits generated will assist the JFK band program.

I had the opportunity to go into Mr. Henry's science class and watch the kids working with huge smiles on their faces. Mr. Henry brought in 50 pounds of dry ice and the kids had fun doing different experiments; most which caused a foggy reaction.

It's been busy around here! District wide initiatives like Fresh Wednesday was a real hit... My hat is off to our stalwart cafeteria staff who worked extra hard (has anyone reading this ever had to peel, cut and cook 160 pounds of squash? I know I haven't..) Purple Day was also a nicely responded to initiative sponsored by our SOCA and Civil Rights Groups.

Field Trips are being planned and I'm sure that the Green Monsters trip to Mike's Maze will prove to be a good time for all.

Our Magazine Drive is winding down and our kids have been great. They have been really excited about the incentives and prizes, they are doing something great for their school and ultimately their efforts will directly benefit them.

Next wednesday October 27th we are hosting a webinar on cyberbullying which is being offered through the Ophelia Project. It will be held from 6:00 to 6:45.

A Halloween dance is being planned for the 8th grade on the 29th.

Also, in the 8th grade their community service initiative is well underway and I look forward to hearing all about their efforts at the celebration on the 29th.

I don't know how I forgot to mention these before; outside the library in display cases are student created Identity boxes. These projects created in Mrs. Mallory's art class are creative, fun to look at and you get a sense and appreciation of its creator.

I've heard quite a few comments about my last post regarding student work and it was suggested that I mention a few more. Every year Mrs. Bisby, the teacher formerly known as Miss Everett, has her students complete personal timelines in which she has the students lives andhow they coincide with historical world events. These projects are really interesting and as I look at he historical events that have happened during our current 8th graders lifetimes, I can't help but realize how time flies.

Outside Madame James room there are also student created colorful brochures/pamphlets. I can't tell you what information they contain but they look nice!

Another item that the Oceans 8 team did together was that all the steam students traced their feet and have them displayed throughout the team area...someday I'll learn what the significance is!

Finally. just down the hall in the Green Monsters wing, each student had the opportunity to draw what they envisioned, their Green Monster Mascot to look like. These creative pieces of art work are humorous, creative and include a message about being green. Prizes were awarded to individual students based on categories pre-set by the teachers...

Great Job Everyone!!

I've been making my way throughout the building and have had the pleasure of being in several classes. Several back to school type projects are on display in many classrooms and in team areas. Several classes have utilized the "I AM FROM" poems and students have created teir own I am From poems and project. These are noticeable outside room 217, Ms. Lyons-Sosa's room and in Room 210,Ms. Ajjan's. Several of Ms. Ajjan's students created models for the project and they are incredible! A lot of evident talent and hopefully a lot of effort. In room 201, Mrs. Sylvain's classes have also created a wide variety of projects in which students present themselves; again excellent and informative. Another interesting thing outside Miss Mack's room are graphs students created to depict what type of learner they are. Through a self-assessment test the students figured out which way they learned best and then colorfully, and creatively displayed their findings. Outside of room 120, there are more examples of ice breaking/getting to know you activities. Students interviewed each other and created posters and collages to describe their new classmates. I encourage all those who can to take a look as some interesting student work...

What a great night! Our Open House was well attended and the many accolades and compliments that were shared by several of our parents and guardians are appreciated. I was glad to be able to introduce myself to and address as a whole the 6th grade parents and guardians. It was wonderful to speak with and see so many familiar faces school wide. I hope all those who attended were thoroughly informed about their childs' school day. If not please get in touch with those teachers from whom you would like more information.

Miss Wilson and I have been meeting with the Teams, it seems that the students and teachers are truly excited about being here and all are looking forward to a great year. Please inquire about the after-school programs, the information will be sent home sometime next week.

The PTO is selling JFK spirit wear, in the school store. The most exciting part of this week was the introduction of the JFK FORUM which we introduced Friday morning. Ask your kids to tell you about it. Our 6th graders are still getting used to the new building and our 7th graders are getting used to the new floor. All of our students had some wonderful year end activities including trips to Look park, field trips to the Bronx Zoo, and Montreal, Interskate and Cinemark, visits to the mark Twain House and Mount Greylock just to name a few. There were team activities both inside and outside the building a great band concert a wonderful chorus concert, the PTO ice cream social and a great 8th grade celebration at the Pines Theatre. We also were able to honor 184 students, 32% of the student body at our 1's Club Ceremony. Full color, hard-covered yearbooks were the rage on the last day and our grade level awards ceremonies were full of smiling, deserving students. Finally, JFK is saying goodbye to some very dedicated educators who are retiring and ready to move on to the next phase of their lives. A huge thank you to Nancy Allen, John Kaczenski, Christine Nolan, and Steve Woodruff. Yes, new people will be here to do their jobs but none of them will ever be replaced...and I for one will really miss them. Just a few more make up sessions and we'll be at 100% participation. Kudos to Ms. Wilson, the Guidance Staff, the entire faculty a for great organization. Let's hope our students results can match the energy and effort put forth by the staff. By the way a nice job (shout out) to the students who in my travels throughout the halls at JFK really seemed to take it serious.

The 8th grade Mayors Dance had a solid turnout and the majority of the students were really decked out. With the leadership of our Principal, hard work of our Guidance Staff and dedication of our staff, it went off without a hitch. I can only hope that our students results can accurately reflect the effort put into it by everyone.

An anti-bullying caucus was held on the Oceans 8 Team which was facilitated by Dr. Hart and Mrs. Kennedy. I was present and it was great to hear from the students regarding their views and perceptions. Kudos to the team for starting the dialog.

Energy Day was held in the 7th grade. This program was organized and run by Green Northampton. Student heard from several speakers about current issues including alternative fuels, solar power, energy use and recycling.

Once again we have partnered up with the District Attorney's office to present Cyber saftey to our students. Condy Boyle from the office worked with our entire 6th and 8th grade to warn them of the dangers that can occur online but also to alert students of their personal responsibilities in using the internet. Topics such as creating a digital image, illegal downloading, cyber bullying, and internet crime were covered. The kids at both grade levels asked many questions and contributed to the class dialog. (This years 7th grade had this opportunity as 6th graders and were also part of the ISAFE cyber safety program ealier in the year.

JFK held its 2nd Spotlight Event. This evening organized by the School Council is set aside to celebrate all the wonderful things that happen here. Over 200 people visited JFK and heard from the Jazz Band, the JFKeys (our a cappela group) people saw demonstrations from our Karate after-school club, and viewed improv comedy. There was student work on display, Physical Education activities, a bake sale, kayaking in the pool, curriculum presented across all subject areas, information about the Washington DC trip, the after-school program, special education, world language, art, and the PTO. Several people made this event possible, teachers, students, parents and guardians, and school stafff. A special thanks to our custodial staff who worked extra hard in the setting up and cleaningup after this event. A special thanks to three 8th grade boys, AUstin, Lyle and Sam for stting up the light fixtures which adorned the main entryway. It is nice to be able to celebrate the good, we all know it is the not so good which usually gets all the press.

The dance Friday afternoon was a good time with over 120 6th graders attending. The 1's Club is a special night reserved for those students who achieve all 1's on the Progress Reports in both conduct and effort in all subjects. I am pleased and proud to say that 41% of the student body earned this distinction and were praised by Miss Nolan, myself and Principal Wilson. We were also entertained by the JFKeys who performed two wonderful songs. The night concluded with a certificate presentation and out high five line and with a huge assortment of desserts and beverages provided by our 1's Club parents.
